Proclamation celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Carlow University Adult Degree Center.

WHEREAS, Allegheny County is blessed with learning institutions that aspire to the highest standards of excellence; and
WHEREAS, in 1978, Carlow University, formerly known as Carlow College, distinguished itself as the first higher education institution in Southwestern Pennsylvania to design accelerated programs for adult learners; and
WHEREAS, originally targeting married career women, the Weekend College was established to meet the demand for degree completion programs that allowed for working women to pursue higher education degrees; and
WHEREAS, in an effort to continue evolving with the times, Carlow instituted The Hill College in 1983 to meet the needs of local African-American women and in 1988, initiated Carlow's Accelerated Program (CAP), which offers undergraduate and graduate-level courses during weekday evenings; and
WHEREAS, the Accelerated Degree Programs are now available at three locations throughout Southwestern Pennsylvania and currently boast a population of 700 women and men who are pursuing higher education degrees;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that Allegheny County Council joins with Carlow University in celebrating the 30th anniversary of Carlow's Accelerated Degree Programs. We hereby commend you for rising to the challenge of providing our region's adults with the education and opportunities that they need in order to be successful in an increasingly competitive workforce and we wish you continued success in the future.
