Proclamation honoring in memoriam Ms. Evelyn D. Richardson for her lifetime of service and achievements in politics and civil rights.

WHEREAS, Ms. Evelyn D. Richardson of Homewood, a civil rights champion, passed from this life on February 20, 2015 at the age of 92; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Richardson grew up in several different foster homes around Western Pennsylvania; As a result of her early experiences, staying with families of diverse backgrounds, she developed a passion for politics and the pursuit of equality and social justice; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Richardson was first appointed to the Democratic National Committee from Pennsylvania in 1970 and was a delegate to more than 20 Democratic National Conventions; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Richardson fought for issues local to her community in Homewood, such as busing services for school children, as well as voting rights for people of color; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Richardson's life's work culminated in November 2008 when she witnessed The Honorable Barack Obama's election as the first Black President of the United States of America;
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that Allegheny County Council does hereby honor the lifetime of service and achievement of Ms. Evelyn D. Richardson. Ms. Richardson is an inspiration to us all and, while we cannot hope to replace her, we can honor her memory by commending and emulating the spirit of her dedication.
