Proclamation honoring the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity upon the occasion of their 2007 2nd District Conference Meeting in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

WHEREAS, on November 17, 1911, three Howard University undergraduate students, Bishop Edgar A. Love, Dr. Oscar J. Cooper and Professor Frank Coleman, with the assistance of their faculty adviser Dr. Ernest E. Just, gave birth to the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, and on October 28, 1914, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity was incorporated under the laws of the District of Columbia; and
WHEREAS, the motto adopted by Omega Psi Phi comes from the initials of the Greek phrase meaning “friendship is essential to the soul”; and
WHEREAS, the founding members adopted manhood, scholarship, perseverance and uplift as cardinal principles; and
WHEREAS, Omega continues to flourish, largely because founders Love, Cooper, Coleman and Just were men of the very highest ideals and intellect, and they selected and attracted men of similar ideals and characteristics; and
WHEREAS, Omega has a rich heritage to be protected, celebrated and enhanced;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that Allegheny County Council does hereby recognize and honor the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity upon the occasion of the 2007 2nd District Conference Meeting in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This Council thanks Omega for its commitment to community service and for its significant contributions towards improving the quality of life for all African- Americans.
