Title

Proclamation recognizing Eat'n Park Restaurants for voluntarily offering a smoke-free environment for its team members and customers.

Body

WHEREAS, on January 2, 2007, Allegheny County Council adopted an ordinance to prohibit smoking in certain public places and workplaces, and providing for penalties for violations; and

                     WHEREAS, on May 22, 2007, Pennsylvania's Commonwealth Court declared that Allegheny County's ban on smoking in public places is preempted by Pennsylvania's Clean Indoor Air Act and is therefore, null and void; and

WHEREAS, on May 31, 2007, Eat'n Park Restaurants, a leading full-service family restaurant chain in the tri-state area, with over 75 restaurants throughout Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Ohio, and with over 8,000 employees, decided to change to a smoke-free environment, irrespective of the Commonwealth Court's ruling; and

                      WHEREAS, we commend the Broadhurst Family for being a leader in the industry and having the courage to voluntarily ban smoking on Eat'n Park Restaurant's premises, thereby protecting workers and patrons alike;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that Allegheny County Council does hereby recognize and thank the Broadhurst Family and Eat'n Park for offering a system-wide non-smoking policy which will protect both team members and guests against the harmful exposure to secondhand smoke.
