Proclamation celebrating the 95th anniversary of Steamfitters Local Union #449.

WHEREAS, since 1913, the Steamfitters Local Union #449 has effectively represented an ever-expanding workforce of trained craftsmen who fabricate, install, and service piping systems; and
WHEREAS, throughout the past 95 years, the evolution of refrigeration, air conditioning, heating, medical gas, boilers, process piping, pipe fabrication, hydraulics and welding processes has required a highly skilled and well-represented workforce; and
WHEREAS, chartered in 1913 in Pittsburgh by the United Association of Plumbers, Steamfitters, and Sprinkler Fitters, Steamfitters Local 449 has created an extensive apprenticeship and training program that has resulted in a legion of multi-skilled workers; and
WHEREAS, Steamfitters Local 449 has distinguished itself as a union that truly values its members and their families, by advocating for fair working hours, excellent benefits, and competitive wages; and
WHEREAS, the exceptional leadership of Steamfitters Local 449 is evident in the union's growth, which has risen from a beginning of 31 members to a membership of more than 1500 skilled workers from throughout Allegheny and Armstrong Counties, as well as parts of Westmoreland, Greene, and Washington Counties; and
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, Allegheny County Council joins with the Steamfitters Local Union #449 in celebrating 95 years of committed service to cultivating a highly skilled and well-represented labor force in Allegheny County. We hereby commend you for your past and continued efforts to ensure that our region's skilled workers have the training and the support that they need to live and work with the highest level of dignity.
