Proclamation commending the organizers and participants of the Hill of Hope Gala.

WHEREAS, founded in 1906, the Centre Avenue YMCA in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania has been instrumental in working to build a stronger community; and
WHEREAS, in the first half of the 1900s, the YMCA was one of the only housing options for African-American University of Pittsburgh students, jazz musicians, athletes, Pullman Porters, and other African-American men visiting the area; and
WHEREAS, the Centre Avenue YMCA continues to focus on its core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility, and seeks to meet the needs of an ever-evolving society; and
WHEREAS, as such, the first “Hill of Hope Gala” will be held on October 18, 2008 at the Children's Museum of Pittsburgh; and
WHEREAS, the event, which will showcase the artistic and musical abilities and talents of Hill District and Centre Avenue YMCA residents, will raise money to assist in funding the vast and diverse programs offered at the YMCA;
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, Allegheny County Council hereby commends the organizers and participants of the first “Hill of Hope Gala.” Your commitment to supporting the Centre Avenue YMCA's mission to improve the lives of Pittsburgh's Hill District residents is an inspiration to the members of this Council and to all the residents of Allegheny County.
