Proclamation naming November "Diabetes Awareness Month" in Allegheny County and acknowledging the efforts of the University of Pittsburgh Diabetes Institute for raising diabetes awareness.

WHEREAS, Allegheny County serves as the headquarters for exceptional medical facilities, organizations and individuals that are recognized worldwide for their contributions to disease research and prevention; and
WHEREAS, this council honors the University of Pittsburgh Diabetes Institute for its mission to provide and support diabetes prevention, detection, education, treatment and research; and
WHEREAS, the institute is the country's largest diabetes registry for tracking and supporting patient statistics, allowing researchers to expand clinical research programs and to create initiatives to combat the disease; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Linda Siminerio, the institute's executive director, has lead an effort to teach and support diabetes awareness around the world; she is the national spokeswoman for the World Diabetes Day campaign, which was celebrated on November 14th, and she leads an international group that raises awareness in underserved communities; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Siminerio's unprecedented dedication to raising awareness assists the 285 million people around the world to fight the negative effects of diabetes;
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that Allegheny County Council, on behalf of the citizens of Allegheny County, does hereby declare November as “Diabetes Awareness Month” in Allegheny County. We commend the University of Pittsburgh Diabetes Institute and Dr. Linda Siminerio for leading the effort to raise diabetes awareness worldwide. While their dedicated fight against diabetes has already helped millions, we will continue to support their commitment to spreading knowledge and awareness.
