Title

Proclamation commending James Harrison's performance through the 2008 NFL regular season and post season, as well as Super Bowl XLIII.

Body

WHEREAS, the Associated Press named Pittsburgh Steelers' linebacker, James Harrison, the National Football League's 2008 Defensive Player of the Year for his exemplary season-long performance that eclipsed all expectations; and

WHEREAS, Harrison sacked opposing quarterbacks 16 times - a Steelers' franchise record - during the regular season. He led the league with seven forced fumbles, and also intercepted one pass and recorded one safety; and

WHEREAS, Harrison is the fifth Steelers' player to win the award, joining former players Joe Green, Mel Blount, Jack Lambert and Rod Woodson. Each former player is now in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio;

WHEREAS, the great defensive plays generated during the regular season by this all-pro spilled into the postseason and eventually into Super Bowl XLIII, where Harrison intercepted a pass on the goal line and ran the ball 100 yards for a Steelers' touchdown at the end of the game's first half. His immaculate effort - motoring the length of the field while plowing through defenders - is now the longest play in Super Bowl history; and

WHEREAS, an undrafted free agent earlier in his career, Harrison's determination to become one of the elite players of the NFL has culminated with a world championship and recognition as the league's best defensive player;

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that this Council, on behalf of the citizens of this great county, commends James Harrison's performance during the regular season, post season and Super Bowl XLIII. Furthermore, we acknowledge Mr. Harrison's indispensible contributions to the team's sixth world championship, and we wish him the best of luck in all of his future endeavors.
