WHEREAS, the residents of Allegheny County are people of every race, color, religion, ancestry, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, disability status and family status; and

                     WHEREAS, discrimination in housing continues to be a problem that often results in overcrowded, segregated areas with substandard and unsafe living conditions, and deprives many members of our community of their right to the American Dream of choosing where to live and/or owning a home of their choice; and

                     WHEREAS, we must not take our rights for granted and we must recognize that discrimination in terms and conditions of the rental, sale, financing, or insuring of real property is illegal, morally offensive and reprehensible; and

                     WHEREAS, ownership of real property is a means for families and individuals to accumulate assets that may benefit the community and future generations; and

                     WHEREAS, we as elected representatives of the people of Allegheny County must dedicate ourselves to working toward insuring that our communities are open to all people to choose where they live;

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that Allegheny County Council hereby recognize and congratulate the Fair Housing Partnership for working together with Allegheny County representatives in working toward the elimination of housing discrimination in our communities; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that Allegheny County Council hereby proclaim the month of April 2004 as “Fair Housing Month” in Allegheny County, recognizing that all of us share responsibility for the future of our community and our nation, and we should not take our freedoms for granted.
