Proclamation proclaiming June 3, 2006 as "Mentoring Awareness Day" in Allegheny County and commending the efforts of The Mentoring Partnership of Southwestern Pennsylvania and Turtle Creek Valley MH/MR, Inc.

WHEREAS, Allegheny County is blessed to have organizations, such as The Mentoring Partnership of Southwestern Pennsylvania and Turtle Creek Valley Mental Health/Mental Retardation, Inc. who have joined forces to provide an opportunity for individuals to learn more about the benefits of mentoring; and
WHEREAS, mentoring plays a significant role in developing productive citizens in our region, providing a great return on investment for the mentor, the mentee and the community; and
WHEREAS, mentored young people are less likely to get involved with drugs, they improve their grades and 86 percent of mentored young people continue their studies in higher education; and
WHEREAS, on Saturday, June 3, 2006 The Mentoring Partnership of Southwestern Pennsylvania and Turtle Creek Valley MH/MR will hold “Mentoring Awareness Day” at The Waterfront in Homestead to emphasize the need for mentors, provide a forum of resource sharing and exchange for youth serving agencies, and to establish new recruitment opportunities for mentoring programs;
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that Allegheny County Council hereby proclaims June 3, 2006 as “Mentoring Awareness Day” in Allegheny County and commends the efforts of The Mentoring Partnership of Southwestern Pennsylvania and Turtle Creek Valley MH/MR, Inc. This Council urges the citizens of Allegheny County, on this day and throughout the year, to instill confidence, self-esteem and skills in our youth to help them grow into thriving, healthy adults.
