Proclamation declaring October 11, 2008 "African-American Heritage Day" in Allegheny County.

 

Body

WHEREAS, each year, residents throughout Allegheny County gather to celebrate African-American Heritage Day; and

 

WHEREAS, the 20th Annual African-American Heritage Day Parade will be held on October 11, 2008; and

                     

WHEREAS, the parade will begin at the Mellon Area and end at Downtown Pittsburgh's Golden Triangle; and

 

WHEREAS, participants will include prominent citizens, politicians, and business owners, as well as numerous bands, marching units, and community organizations; and

 

WHEREAS, the event will highlight and celebrate the rich history and contributions of African-Americans throughout our region in business, education, government, entertainment, and a vast number of other fields and services; and

 

                     WHEREAS, the African-American Heritage Day Parade will also create an awareness of the struggles and triumphs that our region's African-American population has faced and continues to face;

 

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, Allegheny County Council hereby proclaims Saturday, October 11, 2008 “African-American Heritage Day” in Allegheny County.  We commend the organizers and participants of this extraordinary event for bringing the community together to celebrate the history and contributions of African-Americans throughout Allegheny County.
