Body

WHEREAS, on July 4, 2008, the Helmstadter family celebrated their 100th family reunion; and

WHEREAS, the Helmstadter family traces their roots back to Germany in 1776, where Johan Peter Schlassman, grandfather of Anna Catherine Horn, was born.  In April 1875, Anna married Jacob Helmstadter and moved, along with their four oldest children, to McKeesport, Pennsylvania in 1881; and

WHEREAS, John and Jacob Helmstadter, two of Anna and Jacob's ten children, opened Helmstadter's Department Store in McKeesport in 1906, eventually taking over O'Neil's Department Store in 1926.  Their store remained open until 1995; and

WHEREAS, for the past 100 years, the Helmstadter family has remained close, celebrating together in various locations, which, in recent years, have all taken place on the 4th of July; and

WHEREAS, this year's celebration took place on July 4th at Maple Grove in White Oak Park, where the Helmstadter family gathered to share stories and enjoy each other's company;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that Allegheny County Council does hereby recognize the Helmstadter family as they celebrate their 100th family reunion.  As we celebrate Pittsburgh's own 250th anniversary, we are honored to share the heart of Allegheny County with your family.
