Proclamation honoring the Milton Hershey School's 100th Anniversary.

WHEREAS, for the past 100 years, Milton Hershey School has nurtured and educated children in social and financial need to lead fulfilling and productive lives; and
WHEREAS, the school was established in 1909 by chocolate mogul Milton S. Hershey and his wife, Catherine Hershey. The couple was unable to have children of their own, and they decided to utilize their wealth to create a home and a school for orphaned boys; and
WHEREAS, throughout the school's history, it has held steadfast to the values and wishes of the school's original Deed of Trust, which was executed by the couple, and the school now has a list of thousands of alumni; and
WHEREAS, today, each student receives devotion from dedicated teachers and from houseparents - married couples that oversee the homes where groups of students live. Each entity is a proactive and nurturing force in the developments of the students, providing them with a unique life education that complements their quality academic learning; and
WHEREAS, over the past century, the school's impressive efforts to better the lives of children are commendable and should be recognized throughout our nation as a model for assisting those in need;
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that this Council, on behalf of the citizens of Allegheny County, honor the Milton Hershey School's historic 100th year of existence. Furthermore, we hope the school continues to be a positive, driving force in the everyday lives of our children.
