WHEREAS, Allegheny County and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania have been blessed with exemplary leadership throughout the history of our great nation, with visionaries of great knowledge and determination making invaluable contributions to our communities, our country and the world; and

WHEREAS, Pope Benedict XVI appointed Pittsburgh Bishop Donald Wuerl to succeed Cardinal Theodore McCarrick as Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Washington, D.C., a post he will fill on June 22, 2006; and

WHEREAS, Archbishop-designate Wuerl was installed as the 11th bishop of Pittsburgh on February 12, 1988, serving the Diocese of Pittsburgh for 18 years, and this year marks the 40th anniversary of his ordination as a priest; and

WHEREAS, for nearly two decades he has worked with the Pittsburgh community in programs involving civic leadership, in areas such as youth crime prevention, faith-based and human service agencies, inner-city and urban center Catholic education for minority youth, and numerous interfaith and ecumenical activities. He focused his ministry on educating young people in the faith and he conducted countless visits to the 214 parishes across the six counties of the diocese as part of parish spiritual renewal; and

WHEREAS, in addition to serving on numerous boards and committees, Archbishop-designate Wuerl was one of four U.S. bishops named as a delegate to the 11th Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops that met at the Vatican in 2005, where he was elected recording secretary and was one of 12 members in the world to serve on the post-synodal council;

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Allegheny County Council hereby recognizes Archbishop-designate Donald Wuerl for his tremendous contributions to th...
