Proclamation congratulating Duane J. Norton upon his retirement as a WPIAL and PIAA District 7 Official Representative.
Body
WHEREAS, Allegheny County is blessed with individuals dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in our neighborhood and the community as a whole; individuals such as Duane J. Norton, who for 54 years refereed in both high school and college, working thousands of football, basketball, softball and volleyball games, including many WPIAL and PIAA championship games; and
WHEREAS, Duane retired after serving on the WPIAL Board of Directors for 20 years and after serving two terms on the PIAA Board as the District 7 Official Representative representing both WPIAL and PIAA Officials; and
WHEREAS, he is a graduate of McKeesport High School, played football and basketball and ran track for McKeesport. He played semi-professional football for the Grandview Odds and baseball for the Christy Park Vets in the McKeesport Daily News League, Irvin Works Local # 2227 and the Naval Reserve Team; and
WHEREAS, he served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II, later working for U.S. Steel Irvin Works (40 years), thereafter, as an Administrative Aide to Senator Albert V. Belan (10 years), as well as Recreation Chairman (18 years)and Council Member (6 years) for West Mifflin Borough; and
WHEREAS, married to Kathryn “Kitty” for 45 years, Duane looks forward to spending more time with his wife, their two sons and two granddaughters;
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that Allegheny County Council, on behalf of the citizens of Allegheny County, hereby recognizes and commends Duane J. Norton for his unparalleled dedication and commitment to officiating and public service. This Council wishes him all the best on his well-deserved retirement as WPIAL and PIAA District 7 Official Representative, and joins his family and friends in celebrating this momentous occasion with him.
