Proclamation celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the Holy Trinity Serbian Orthodox Cathedral and recognizing November 3-5, 2006 as Serbian Orthodox Heritage Weekend in Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, the year 2006 marks the 100th anniversary of the first Serbian Orthodox Church in Pittsburgh and, to celebrate, a Serbian Orthodox Heritage Weekend will be held from November 3rd through the 5th; and
WHEREAS, St. George Serbian Eastern Orthodox Church incorporated on the South Side on January 19, 1906 and merged with St. Sava Serbian Orthodox Church in 1961 to form Holy Trinity Serbian Orthodox Cathedral in the Borough of Whitehall; and
WHEREAS, the Serbian Orthodox Church is the center of community life; it is here that one finds the choir, dance groups, and ladies and men's auxiliaries, groups which not only support the religious purposes of the church but they also provide the impetus for the social life of its members; and
WHEREAS, concerts, dances, picnics and holiday celebrations all provide reasons to gather, to maintain, and perpetuate Serbian and Orthodox traditions. At any celebration, be it individual family or the entire church community, you will find traditional foods and music as well as continued respect for the ancestral ways of conducting these celebrations;
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that Allegheny County Council does hereby join in celebrating the momentous occasion of the Holy Trinity Serbian Orthodox Cathedral's 100th Anniversary. We recognize the Serbian Orthodox Heritage Weekend from November 3-5, 2006, as a time to honor the rich religious and cultural heritage of Serbian Orthodox people in Pittsburgh and throughout Allegheny County.
