Proclamation celebrating the 100th anniversary of the annexation of Allegheny City, now known as the North Side, to the City of Pittsburgh.

 

Body

WHEREAS, December 7, 2007 marked the 100th anniversary of the annexation of Allegheny City, now known as the North Side, to the City of Pittsburgh; and

 

WHEREAS, from the time that it was incorporated as a city in 1840 until the time it was annexed by the City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny City was largely industrial, with everything from iron, textiles, furniture, and steam engines bearing the “Made in Allegheny” label; and 

 

WHEREAS, Allegheny City was also home to many notable citizens, including composer Stephen Foster, dancer Martha Graham, authors Gertrude Stein and Mary Roberts Rinehart, businessman H.J. Heinz, and industrialist and humanitarian Andrew Carnegie; and

 

WHEREAS, in 1907, a largely controversial decision was made by the United States Supreme Court to annex Allegheny City to the City of Pittsburgh; and

 

WHEREAS, a 100 Year Anniversary celebration was held on December 6, 2007 by the Allegheny City Society, a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the history of and providing education about the former Allegheny City;

 

                     

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that Allegheny County Council does hereby join in celebrating the 100th anniversary of the annexation of Allegheny City, now known as the North Side, to the City of Pittsburgh.  With its rich history, the North Side is a truly valuable asset to our region and on behalf of the citizens of Allegheny County, we thank the Allegheny City Society for continuing perpetuate its historical and social significance.
