title
Motion Expressing the Sense of Council of Allegheny County, urging the General Assembly and Governor of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to withhold any public subsidy from the Pittsburgh Steelers and Continental Real Estate Companies to help build a $12 million entertainment complex on the North Shore.
body
WHEREAS, a 3.9-acre tract of land next to Heinz Field was recently approved for sale to the Pittsburgh Steelers; and
WHEREAS, the Steelers and Continental Real Estate Companies are now seeking a $4 million public subsidy to develop the land and build a $12 million entertainment complex; and
WHEREAS, Heinz Field was financed by $281 million in public funds, while $76.5 million was contributed by the Steelers organization, and PNC Park was financed by $176 million in public funds, while just $40 million was contributed by the Pittsburgh Pirates; and
WHEREAS, it is Council's belief that no additional taxpayer money should be used to develop the land between PNC Park and Heinz Field; and
WHEREAS, it is further Council's belief that the expenditure of $4 million dollars of taxpayer money in order to help a privately owned and financially successful organization is not consistent with fiscally sound policy and is not in the best interest of the residents of Allegheny County or the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania;
NOW THEREFORE, IT IS MOVED, that, Allegheny County Council does hereby urge the General Assembly and Governor to withhold any state funding that would subsidize the Pittsburgh Steelers and Continental Real Estate Companies construction of a $12 million entertainment complex on Pittsburgh's North Shore at the expense of taxpayers.
