Proclamation recognizing the Lupus Foundation of Pennsylvania and the Pittsburgh branch for hosting the 18th Annual Lupus Challenge Golf Tournament on July 9, 2007 at the Club at Nevillewood.
Body
WHEREAS, lupus is a chronic, inflammatory disease in which the body's immune system fails to serve its normal protective functions and instead forms antibodies that attack healthy tissues and organs; and
WHEREAS, it is estimated that 1.4 to 2 million Americans have been diagnosed with lupus, making it more common that leukemia, multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy and cystic fibrosis combined; and
WHEREAS, while there is no cure for lupus, the prognosis is much better today, with early diagnoses and current methods of therapy, 80 to 90 percent of people with lupus can look forward to a normal lifespan; and
WHEREAS, the Lupus Foundation of Pennsylvania provides lupus awareness, education, service, support and research; and
WHEREAS, the Lupus Foundation of Pennsylvania's Pittsburgh branch will hold its 18th Annual Lupus Challenge Golf Tournament on July 9, 2007 at the Club at Nevillewood to help raise funds to support lupus research;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that Allegheny County Council does hereby recognize and thank the Lupus Foundation of Pennsylvania, and the Pittsburgh branch especially, for their efforts to raise awareness of lupus and for providing programs and services that help lupus patients and their families understand the many aspects of lupus.
