Proclamation congratulating the Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh as it prepares to celebrate its 100th anniversary.

 

 

Body

WHEREAS, as the City of Pittsburgh prepares to celebrate its 250th anniversary, the Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh is preparing to celebrate its centennial, distinguishing it as one of the oldest continuous performing arts organizations in Pittsburgh; and

 

                     WHEREAS, the Mendelssohn Male Choir was founded on July 20, 1908 and, under the direction of conductor Ernest Lunt, premiered on January 28, 1909 at Carnegie Music Hall, where it was received with critical acclaim; and

                     

WHEREAS, the Choir has collaborated with organizations including the Children's Festival Chorus, Duquesne Tamburitzans, Pittsburgh Poetry Forum, River City Brass Band, and the Renaissance City Winds and has featured such guests as Efrem Zimbalist, Nelson Eddy, Hilda Harris, Leona Mitchell, and countless other talented musicians, vocalists, and narrators; and

 

WHEREAS, the Choir has focused many of its efforts on creating a more professional and educational organization, forming a professional core in 1981 and establishing the Junior Mendelssohn Choir in 1986; and

 

                     WHEREAS, the Choir has commissioned and premiered three major choral works, including An American Oratorio, Missa Mysteriorium, and Requiem and has participated in multiple recordings, including Beethoven's 9th Symphony, Five Tudor Portraits with the Pittsburgh Symphony, and Rachmaninoff's Vespers;

 

 

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, Allegheny County Council congratulates the Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh upon the momentous occasion of its 100th anniversary.  As you embark on your “Century of Song” celebration, we wish you continued success, and we thank you for your commitment to providing Allegheny County with such an accomplished arts organization.
