Proclamation recognizing Urban Youth Action, Inc. as they embark on their 42nd Annual Banquet.

 

 

Body

WHEREAS, on June 10, 2008, Urban Youth Action, Incorporated (UYA) will celebrate its 42nd Annual Banquet, themed “Education: Passport to the Future”; and

 

                     WHEREAS, UYA will host author, psychiatrist, educator and respected social critic, Dr. Alvin Poussaint as their guest speaker at this year's event, where he will discuss his most recent book, co-authored by Dr. Bill Cosby and entitled, Come On, People! On the Path from Victims to Victors; and

 

                     WHEREAS, the Banquet will also include a college fair and private reception with Dr. Poussaint; and

                     

WHEREAS, this year's awardees include FedEx Ground, Penn State Greater Allegheny, Allegheny College and Mrs. Lennie Henry; and

 

WHEREAS, UYA, founded in 1966 by the late Mr. Bernard H. Jones, Sr., was developed in order to provide a place for youth to develop their potential and become assets to their families and communities; and

 

WHEREAS, UYA's current initiatives include an after-school program, during which students learn the essentials of the job search process, explore business ownership, supply life-skills information, and which connects students with internships, tutoring, and college tours.  Additional initiatives include a school-based program that provides students with life skills education, career awareness exploration, and violence prevention education and an outreach program that includes activities such as the Charles Drew Science Fair and the Youth Business Symposium;

 

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, Allegheny County Council congratulates Urban Youth Action, Inc. as they embark on their 42nd Annual Banquet.  Furthermore, we commend you for your commitment to providing area youth with the tools to become confident and responsible members of our society.
