WHEREAS, on Sunday, February 1, 2009, Mike Tomlin, the Pittsburgh Steelers' head coach, became the youngest coach in National Football League history to win a Super Bowl championship by leading the Steelers to a 27-23 victory over the Arizona Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII; and
WHEREAS, Tomlin navigated the Steelers through one of the toughest game schedules during the 2008 regular season, coaching the team to a 12-4 record and to a division title; and
WHEREAS, during the playoffs, Tomlin's signature poise and preparedness maintained the Steelers' focus on each game; these qualities trickled down to the players, who mirrored their coach on the playing field and performed with confidence and determination; and
WHEREAS, after earning the American Football Conference championship, Tomlin commanded the Steelers to a dramatic comeback victory over the Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII; at 36, he is the youngest coach to win a Super Bowl and only the second African American to win the NFL championship, joining Tony Dungy;
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that this Council, on behalf of the citizens of Allegheny County, recognizes and commends Coach Mike Tomlin for leading the Pittsburgh Steelers to an unprecedented sixth world championship. Furthermore, we wish Coach Tomlin the best of luck in all of his future endeavors, especially in his pursuit of another championship ring.
