Body

WHEREAS, Charles “Buck” McGovern, Chairman of the Board of Commissioners of Allegheny County, helped establish the Allegheny County Police Department in 1932.  The Board of Commissioners wanted to create a law enforcement entity that was free of political influence and one that would be of service to the residents of Allegheny County and the many visitors who pass through the county each year; and

WHEREAS, this year marks the 75th anniversary of the official creation of the Allegheny County Police Department, a force that grew and developed remarkably over the years to become the highly respected, effective law enforcement element it is today; and

                     WHEREAS, William Rucker, first Superintendent of the Allegheny County Police Department, helped guide the spirited individuals who comprised the patrol in 1932 and blazed the path to where the Allegheny County Police Department is today; and

WHEREAS, the Allegheny County Police Department is comprised of more than 240 officers and 50 civilians and is responsible for patrolling the regional parks including North and South Park, Pittsburgh International Airport, and the Allegheny County Airport; and

WHEREAS, for 75 years the men and women of the Allegheny County Police Department continue to abide by their motto “To Serve With Honor” and we remember the organization's proud history, especially the men and women who paid the ultimate sacrifice;
