Proclamation honoring the life and legacy of Mr. Marion A. Gerardi, long-time Sharpsburg Mayor, for his commitment to public service and impact on the community.

WHEREAS, on August 6, 2006, the Borough of Sharpsburg, County of Allegheny, will hold a dedication ceremony at the 16th Street playground honoring former long-time Sharpsburg mayor Mr. Marion A. Gerardi; and
WHEREAS, affectionately known as “Mutt” because of his childhood propensity for rescuing stray dogs, Mr. Gerardi served six consecutive terms as mayor of Sharpsburg from 1975 to 1998. Mr. Gerardi's interest in politics began when he was appointed to fill a school board vacancy in the former Sharpsburg School District, now part of the Fox Chapel Area School District; and
WHEREAS, he grew up in Sharpsburg and graduated from Sharpsburg High School in 1948. He studied two years at Duff's Business College and worked as an accountant for Crucible Steel and Peoples Gas until he retired in 1989. He served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers during the Korean War and was a member of the American Legion Post 106 in Sharpsburg; and
WHEREAS, he was a talented soloist and served as choir director of Madonna of Jerusalem Church in Sharpsburg for more than 30 years; and
WHEREAS, we join Mr. Gerardi's family and friends in celebration of an individual who so completely personified compassion and community spirit and recognize this dedication as the kick-off for Sharpsburg's annual community-wide event “Guyasuta Days”;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that Allegheny County Council does hereby honor the life and legacy of Mr. Marion A. Gerardi for his impact on this community and its citizens. Mr. Gerardi's commitment to public service, serves as an inspiration to us all and, while we cannot hope to replace him, we can honor his memory by commending and emulating the spirit of his dedication.
