Proclamation commending the Penn Hills School District and the Municipality of Penn Hills for their efforts in the Relay for Life Pittsburgh East event.
Body
WHEREAS, cancer is a group of diseases characterized by uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal cells which, if not controlled, can result in death; and
WHEREAS, 70,110 new cases of cancer are estimated to occur in Pennsylvania in 2009, and approximately 29, 370 people in Pennsylvania are expected to die from cancer this year; and
WHEREAS, the American Cancer Society is the nationwide community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer through research, education, advocacy, and service; and
WHEREAS, the Municipality of Penn Hills and the Penn Hills School District has and continues to offer support of the courageous battle being fought against cancer by hosting the Relay for Life of Pittsburgh east event; and
WHEREAS, the Relay for Life of Pittsburgh East presents and opportunity to raise awareness and funds in a non-competitive community event where teams take turns walking or running around a track for 24 straight hours. While awaiting their turn on the track, teams camp out at the site and enjoy themselves in a carnival-like atmosphere with entertainment, food, and camaraderie;
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, Allegheny County Council hereby proclaims that the Municipality of Penn Hills and the Penn Hills School District are “outstanding leaders in the fight against cancer!” Furthermore, we urge all residents of Allegheny County to recognize members of this municipality and school district for their outstanding efforts.
