WHEREAS, on July 28, 2007, Men of Fifth Avenue will celebrate their Annual Alumni Reunion; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Louis “Hop” Kendrick is the founder of Men of Fifth Avenue, an alumni association from the now defunct Fifth Avenue High School, which was located at 1800 Fifth Avenue in Pittsburgh <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pittsburgh>, Pennsylvania <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pennsylvania>'s Hill District <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hill_District>; and
WHEREAS, the school was built in 1894 <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1894> and served the Pittsburgh Public School <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pittsburgh_Public_Schools> District until its closure in 1976; and
WHEREAS, Fifth Avenue was the first fire-proof school in Pennsylvania and was home to the Alpha Chapter of the National Honor Society <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Honor_Society>. Its colors were red and white, and the mascot was the Archer; and
WHEREAS, Fifth Avenue was a dominant force in city sports, winning the state title in its last year open for basketball. The school served the Lower Hill District, while its main rival, Schenley High School <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schenley_High_School>, served the upper and middle Hill;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that Allegheny County Council does hereby recognize Men of Fifth Avenue and their much anticipated Annual Alumni Celebration on July 28, 2007. We join in celebration with friends and family during this joyous occasion and wish Men of Fifth Avenue continued blessings.
