Proclamation recognizing March 8, 2007 as "World Kidney Day" in Allegheny County and commending the National Kidney Foundation of the Alleghenies for their work towards raising awareness of chronic kidney disease.

WHEREAS, to call attention to the crucial role of the kidneys and the pressing, global need for the early detection and prevention of kidney disease, hundreds of thousands of health care professionals, kidney patients and their families and friends in more than 40 countries are participating in World Kidney Day this 8th day of March 2007; and
WHEREAS, World Kidney Day is a joint initiative of the International Society of Nephrology (ISN) and the International Federation of Kidney Foundations (IFKF); and
WHEREAS, 1 out of every 9 Americans have chronic kidney disease, and 20,000,000 Americans have chronic kidney disease; and
WHEREAS, in Allegheny County, approximately 1,732 people are on dialysis and approximately 214,876 people are at-risk or have chronic kidney disease; and
WHEREAS, the National Kidney Foundation of the Alleghenies will celebrate World Kidney Day on Thursday, March 8, 2007 at Oxford Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to help reduce the incidence and impact of chronic kidney disease, a “silent” disease that often goes undiagnosed;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that Allegheny County Council does hereby proclaim March 8, 2007 to be “World Kidney Day” in Allegheny County and we commend the work of the National Kidney Foundation of the Alleghenies for their efforts towards raising awareness of chronic kidney disease and promoting early detection.
