Proclamation proclaiming June 3, 2006 as "Mentoring Awareness Day" in Allegheny County and commending the efforts of the Tri-Boro Prevention Network in the Mon Valley.

WHEREAS, Allegheny County is blessed to have organizations, such as the Tri-Boro Prevention Network in the Mon Valley, involved in providing positive programming to youth and their families who live in the communities of Braddock, N. Braddock, Rankin and Turtle Creek neighborhoods; and
WHEREAS, mentoring plays a significant role in developing productive citizens in our region and the Tri-Boro Prevention Network continues to collaborate for change in the lives of young people who are considered at-risk; and
WHEREAS, over 4,000 youth who reside in the aforementioned communities have been identified as at-risk. Young people that have mentors are less likely to use drugs and alcohol, skip school or engage in negative activities; and
WHEREAS, mentoring offers our youth hope in the form of successful, consistent role models who take an active interest in the lives of our youth; and
WHEREAS, every June, “Mentoring Awareness Day” is held to emphasize the need for mentors, provide a forum of resource sharing and exchange for youth serving agencies, and to establish new recruitment opportunities for mentoring programs in the Mon Valley region;
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that Allegheny County Council hereby proclaims June 3, 2006 as “Mentoring Awareness Day” in Allegheny County and commends the efforts of the Tri-Boro Prevention Network. This Council urges the citizens of Allegheny County, on this day and throughout the year, to instill confidence, self-esteem and skills in our youth to help them grow into thriving, healthy adults.
