Proclamation recognizing the South Park Historical Society's Green Project, which seeks to help the environment by replacing plastic shopping bags with reusable canvas bags throughout the South Park area.

WHEREAS, operating under the mission of “preserving, educating, and disseminating the history of our area,” the South Park Historical Society has spent nearly 13 years making the people of South Park proud of their rich history; and

 

WHEREAS, among the Society's many achievements are the publishing of several books, the preservation of two important historical buildings from demolition, the presentation of programs for community groups and schools, and the supplying of historic information and photo displays for the South Park Township Library; and

 

WHEREAS, most recently, the Society has undertaken a project entitled, “Keeping South Park Green”; and

 

WHEREAS, under the leadership of several Society officers and members, and through the support of elected officials and community members, the Society's campaign involves replacing plastic shopping bags with reusable canvas bags; and

 

WHEREAS, since its introduction in January 2008, the campaign has already sold over 100 bags, contributing greatly to the reduction of plastic bags used around the community; and

 

WHEREAS, the Society is also working with the South Park Township Supervisors to keep South Park “clean and green” through a variety of environmental projects;

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that Allegheny County Council would like to recognize the South Park Historical Society for their “Keeping South Park Green” project.  Your efforts to improve the environment are commendable, and serve as an inspiration to the Members of this Council and all the residents of Allegheny County.
