Proclamation recognizing The Black and White Reunion for their 10th Annual Summit Against Racism, held on January 26, 2008.

WHEREAS, the Black and White Reunion was organized in 1996 in an effort to reunite black and white individuals in the Pittsburgh area and to promote a spirit of collaboration in addressing racial and social inequities still present in our society; and
WHEREAS, in 1999, Black and White Reunion founder Tim Stevens brought together community leaders and activists to join in the 1st Annual Summit Against Racism; and
WHEREAS, 2008 marks the 10th anniversary of the Summit Against Racism, as well as the 40th anniversary Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s assassination. As such, the theme of this year's summit is “The Power of One: A Commitment to Individual and Collective Action”; and
WHEREAS, the “Power of One” theme was chosen to highlight the many people throughout history who were instrumental in taking both individual and collective action to fight for racial justice and understanding, including Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Anne Frank, Malcolm X, John Brown, John F. Kennedy, Harriet Tubman, and Che Guevara; and
WHEREAS, this year's theme also holds special meaning for those familiar with the 1995 death of Jonny Gammage, a businessman and former social worker who also volunteered with the former Hunger Services Network. The Black and White Reunion was founded in response to Jonny's death at the hands of local police officers and his legacy continues to inspire people of all races to work together to eliminate racism; and
WHEREAS, this year's Summit will feature comments by Allegheny County Chief Executive Dan Onorato and Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl, inspirational keynote speeches, and a vigil for peace, as well as workshops featuring discussions regarding racism and segregation, community engagement, media literacy, and violence prevention;
