Proclamation designating Saturday, September 23, 2006 as "Porky Chedwick Day" in Allegheny County.

WHEREAS, on September 23rd, 2006, the Second Annual FontanaFest at South Side's Riverfront Park will recognize Pittsburgh native Mr. Craig “Porky” Chedwick, affectionately known as “Daddio of the Raddio” for his many contributions to rock and roll; and
WHEREAS, on August 1, 1948, Porky, from Homestead, Pennsylvania, became the first Caucasian DJ on the east coast to present an exclusive program of African-American rhythm & blues, jazz and gospel artists; and
WHEREAS, situated behind a Homestead candy store “The Porky Chedwick Show” became a fixture on station WHOD AM 860. Dynamic Broadcasting bought WHOD and renamed the station WAMO with a country format, with the exception of The Porky Chedwick Show” a program that remained WAMO's top advertising draw; and
WHEREAS, in 1996, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland, Ohio recognized Porky's status among other legendary DJ's, preserving his biography and featuring him in a special DJ exhibit;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that Allegheny County Chief Executive Dan Onorato and Council President Rich Fitzgerald do hereby proclaim September 23, 2006 as “Porky Chedwick Day” in Allegheny County. We sincerely thank Porky for bringing joy and happiness to the residents of Allegheny County and to the world through music, friendship and inspiration.
