WHEREAS, Allegheny County is blessed with individuals dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in our neighborhood and the community as a whole; such as the late Honorable James F. Lally. James held a 33-year tenure as business agent for Steamfitters Union Local 449, and was a well-known, well-liked and active member of the community; and
WHEREAS, a lifelong resident of Pittsburgh, James graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1941. Shortly after, he began his apprenticeship for the Steamfitters Union Local 449. James became the union’s business agent, a position he held proudly for more than 30 years; and
WHEREAS, James also worked for the City’s Stadium Authority for 14 years, spent one term on the Pittsburgh City Council, was elected President of the Construction Trades Council, served as Executive Vice President of the Allegheny Labor Council, was a member of the Federal Home Loan Bank Board, the Port Authority Board, Pittsburgh Stadium Authority and the Executive Director of Three Rivers Stadium; and
WHEREAS, James, a devoted member of the Catholic faith, was heavily involved in his local church, St. Paul’s Cathedral in Oakland. He was the head usher for the 10 a.m. Mass for 72 years. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, Knights of Equity and Pittsburgh Athletic Association; and
WHEREAS, James is remembered as a loving and dedicated husband, father, grandfather, leader and friend. He is the namesake of the James F. Lally Memorial Scholarship Fund at Central Catholic High School;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that Allegheny County Council, on behalf of the citizens of Allegheny County, hereby recognizes the late Honorable James F. Lally for his contributions to the City of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County. James is a true example of civic leadership and engagement in one’s commu...
