Proclamation congratulating Mr. Joe Welch for winning the National History Teacher of the Year Award.

WHEREAS, “the principal goal of education in the schools should be creating men and women who are capable of doing new things, not simply repeating what other generations have done.” That quote by Jean Piaget truly depicts the teaching style of North Hills Middle School Teacher, Mr. Joe Welch; and

 

     WHEREAS, Mr. Welch currently teaches eighth grade history and has spent his entire 12-year teaching career doing so. His dedication to his students and ensuring that they feel history, not just memorize it, is unparalleled; and

 

     WHEREAS, Mr. Welch was originally nominated for Pennsylvania History Teacher of the Year by two of his coworkers at North Hills Middle School who knew his passion for history and dynamic teaching skills deserved recognition. In August, he was announced as a Top 10 National Finalist by the Gilder Lehram Institute of American History; and

 

     WHEREAS, in September 2018, Mr. Welch won the National History Teacher of the Year Award, and he is the youngest person ever to do so. Mr. Welch was chosen by a panel of teachers, administrators and scholars from across the nation for his achievements in American history education. Mr. Welch was honored at a ceremony at the Yale Club in New York City on Oct. 10, where he was presented with a plaque and a $10,000 prize;

 

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that I, Allegheny County Council Member Tom Baker, do hereby recognize and congratulate Mr. Joe Welch for winning the National History Teacher of the Year Award, and we commend him for his dedication to bringing history alive and more relatable for students.
