Motion of the Council of Allegheny County expressing the full support of Council for the National Flag Foundation’s Light to Unite national day of unity on July 4, 2026.

WHEREAS, on July 4, 2026, the National Flag Foundation (NFF) is planning to commemorate the 250th anniversary of our country with the “Light to Unite” national day of unity; and
WHEREAS, the NFF is a non-profit, non-political foundation with its home location in Pittsburgh, and is dedicated to education about the American Flag and honoring those who have served to support our country and its national symbol; and
WHEREAS, as part of this commemorative event, NFF is asking that all American cities display red, white, and blue lighting patterns in a display of unity; and
WHEREAS, NFF already has commitments to participate and/or expressions of support for the endeavor from major buildings across the nation, as well as the Pennsylvania 250th Committee, the U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission (America 250), the City of Pittsburgh, American Gold Star Mothers, Inc., Disabled American Veterans, the Military Order of the Purple Heart, and others; and
WHEREAS, it is the judgment of Council that NFF’s Light to Unite initiative is a worthy means of commemorating this significant anniversary;
The Council of the County of Allegheny therefore hereby moves as follows:
That Allegheny County Council hereby fully supports the National Flag Foundation’s Light to Unite national day of unity initiative.
