Proclamation honoring Fred Honsberger for his 30 years at KDKA Radio.

 

Body

WHEREAS, 30 years ago, Fred Honsberger joined KDKA Radio as a news anchor and a reporter; and

 

WHEREAS, along with a team of reporters, Mr. Honsberger was given the Dupont Award for his in-depth coverage of the Three Mile Island nuclear disaster in 1979; and

 

WHEREAS, Mr. Honsberger was promoted to News Director at KDKA Radio in 1984 and remained in the role until 1989, when he began his prestigious career as a talk show host; and

 

WHEREAS, Mr. Honsberger has covered historic Pittsburgh and world events, including Mayor Richard Caliguiri's death in May 1988; the Pittsburgh Penguins Stanley Cup celebration in 1992; the PAT bus drivers strike in 1992; the tragic death of Princess Diana from London in 1997; and trips to the White House during the administrations of George H. W. Bush and Bill Clinton; and

 

WHEREAS, Mr. Honsberger is a two-time winner of the Radio and Television News Director Association's award for excellence in radio news; he has won a Golden Quill Award for his radio special about the Pittsburgh police undercover drug squad; he has been named Best Talk Show Host by the Achievement in Radio Awards in 1997, 2003 and 2005; and the Associated Press has named his show the Best Radio Talk Show in Pennsylvania in 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007;

 

 

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that Allegheny County Council, on behalf of the citizens of the county, recognizes Fred Honsberger's 30 years at KDKA Radio. Furthermore, we hope Mr. Honsberger continues to have a successful broadcasting career in Pittsburgh.
