Proclamation recognizing Fox Chapel Area High School students Julia Hazlet, Doug Weisband, and Kevin Pflumm for their efforts in pushing Pennsylvania lawmakers to allow 17-year-olds to vote in the primary elections.

WHEREAS, for the past four years, the Greater Pittsburgh Student Voices' Civics Fair has given local students the opportunity to address a diverse set of issues through the use of demonstration projects, written materials, and informational posters; and
WHEREAS, Fox Chapel Area High School students Julia Hazlet, Doug Weisband, and Kevin Pflumm won 1st place in the “Community Project” category at this year's 4th annual Civics Fair; and
WHEREAS, the premise of their project was for Pennsylvania State lawmakers to allow 17-year-olds who will be 18 by the general election to vote in the primary election; and
WHEREAS, in addition to gathering petitions from approximately 350 of their peers, the students also contacted local and state lawmakers in an effort to push for hearings on the proposal; and
WHEREAS, in April, the three students will travel to present their proposal in front of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that Allegheny County Council wishes to recognize Fox Chapel Area High School students Julia Hazlet, Doug Weisband, and Kevin Pflumm for developing a project that could potentially allow our youth greater control over our country's political future. Your hard work is admirable, and serves as an inspiration to the youth of our great County of Allegheny and to the Members of this Council.
