Motion Expressing the Sense of Council urging the General Assembly of Pennsylvania and each municipality within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to enact legislation that would require the chief independent elected official to resign from office prior to becoming a candidate for nomination or election to any other elected political office.
body
WHEREAS, requiring the chief elected official to resign prior to starting a campaign for another office would ensure the integrity and efficiency of the office that the official currently holds; and
WHEREAS, requiring the chief elected official to serve out his or her term before seeking other duties will result in an objective government; and
WHEREAS, the aim of this legislation is to serve the public interest by eliminating the need for chief elected officials to bear the burden of simultaneously managing both their normal duties and the additional responsibilities of campaigning;
NOW THEREFORE, IT IS MOVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF ALLEGHENY COUNTY, that we urge the General Assembly of Pennsylvania and each municipality within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to enact a "resign-to-run" law that would require the chief independent elected official to resign from office prior to becoming a candidate for nomination or election to any other elected political office.
