Proclamation honoring the Aero Club of Pittsburgh's 100th anniversary.

WHEREAS, the citizens of Allegheny County have shown great enthusiasm for aviation since the reality of flying became evident in 1903; and
WHEREAS, the Aero Club of Pittsburgh - which celebrates its 100th anniversary on November 21, 2009 - has embraced the aviators of our region and given them an organization that encourages their love of flying; and
WHEREAS, the club is home to veteran pilots who have served in active duty to defend our country; it is home to explorers, instructors, weathermen, business people and aviation historians; and it is home to pilots who are enthralled by flying for leisure and recreation; and
WHEREAS, the Aero Club of Pittsburgh has played an instrumental role in establishing the airports of our region; the club generated public support for the creation of a military airport, which later became Pittsburgh International Airport, and helped select the site for the Allegheny County Airport; and
WHEREAS, the club created The Aviation Foundation to preserve and promote the science of aviation in our region; it provides scholarships to needy students who are interested in pursuing an education in aviation-related endeavors, and it assists in the preservation of historic aircrafts; it is essential to our aviation culture and to youths interested in flying;
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that Allegheny County Council, on behalf of the citizens of Allegheny County, honors the Aero Club of Pittsburgh upon the monumental occasion of its 100th year anniversary. We commend all of the past and present members of the club for their unending dedication to promoting aviation to the citizens and governments of our region. We hope the Aero Club of Pittsburgh continues to thrive well into the future.
