Proclamation recognizing PA One Call System upon the occasion of its 36th anniversary.

WHEREAS, the Pennsylvania One Call System, Inc., a non-profit organization headquartered in West Mifflin, Pennsylvania, is dedicated to preventing damage to underground facilities through an efficient, cost-effective communications network for designers, excavators, and facility owners; and
WHEREAS, 2008 marks the momentous occasion of Pennsylvania One Call System's 36th anniversary; and
WHEREAS, this unique service provides easy, one-call notification about construction and excavation projects that may endanger workers and jeopardize utility lines while also promoting public safety, reducing underground utility damages, minimizing utility service interruptions, and protecting the environment; and
WHEREAS, the agency began with only six utility companies in Western Pennsylvania and the City of Pittsburgh, while today they serve more than 100,000 excavators and 3,100 critical infrastructure owners throughout all 67 counties in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania; and
WHEREAS, each year, the Pennsylvania One Call System transmits more than 6 million notifications, providing protection to utility companies, their employees, and customers;
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that Allegheny County Council does hereby congratulate Pennsylvania One Call System, Inc. upon its 36th anniversary and we proclaim the month of May 2008 as “Call Before You Dig Month” in Allegheny County, reminding all residents to call 1-800-242-1776 before they dig in order to avoid injury, protect our environment, and prevent economic loss.
