WHEREAS, for 84 years the Slovaks of Western Pennsylvania have gathered in Kennywood Park to celebrate their heritage and socialize with old friends and make new ones; and
WHEREAS, all Slovak American organizations, churches, fraternals and businesses in western Pennsylvania participate to make it a day full of cultural activities, fellowship and fun; and
WHEREAS, this year the Bishop of Greensburg, Lawrence E. Brandt, will celebrate a Mass with fellow clergy of the Pittsburgh and Greensburg Dioceses; and
WHEREAS, a special focus of the official program is the Centennial Anniversary of the Slovak League of America (1907) and its special connection to the City of Pittsburgh through the signing of the Pittsburgh Agreement, creating the country of Czecho-Slovakia, in 1918; and
WHEREAS, this fall the original Pittsburgh Agreement will be presented by the Slovak League of America to the Heinz History Center in downtown Pittsburgh to be permanently displayed;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that Allegheny County Council does hereby recognize and celebrate the 84th Annual Slovak American Day at Kennywood Park on July 19, 2007, and we look forward to the Centennial Anniversary of the Slovak League of America and the historic Pittsburgh Agreement dedication to the Heinz History Center.
