Proclamation congratulating Amizade Global Service-Learning upon the occasion of its 20th anniversary.
Body...
WHEREAS, Amizade, the Portuguese word for friendship, was established in 1994 by Daniel Weiss as a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting volunteerism, providing community service, encouraging collaboration, and improving cultural awareness in locations throughout the world; and
WHEREAS, Amizade is the product of hundreds of service-learning pioneers who have engaged in over two decades of programmatic and academic development; it is the result of never-ending efforts by communities around the world; and it is an ongoing global movement with over 8,000 volunteers; and
WHEREAS, Amizade works with over 50 universities and high schools each year organizing global service-learning placements; in addition to volunteer programs, Amizade is the only organization in the region with Special Consultative Status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council; and
WHEREAS, headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Amizade powers The Global Switchboard, Pittsburgh's home for global engagement, and in 2015, Amizade will be organizing a U.S. State Department sponsored leadership and service program for Pittsburgh area youth to engage with Bolivian and Peruvian youth;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that Allegheny County Council does hereby congratulate Amizade Global Service-Learning upon the momentous occasion of its 20th Anniversary, and we thank Amizade for empowering individuals and communities through service and learning for 20 years.
