Proclamation commending the 25th anniversary of the Duquesne Works reunion picnic.
Body
WHEREAS, the steel industry thrived in Western Pennsylvania for nearly 100 years, and when mills closed in the latter portion of the twentieth century, many people lost a piece of their heritage; and
WHEREAS, this year commemorates the 25th anniversary of the closing of the Duquesne Works in Duquesne; and
WHEREAS, as in many mills, the workers at Duquesne Works were a close knit family, and a reunion has been held yearly for friends and family to keep in touch with others who worked at the mill; and
WHEREAS, the gatherings have grown over the years, and, on August 8, 2009, the yearly reunion meets again to celebrate the Duquesne Works and to commemorate a memory of the colossal industry that once dominated Pittsburgh and in Western Pennsylvania;
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, Allegheny County Council, on behalf of the citizens of Allegheny County, hereby recognizes the importance of the steel workers reunion taking place on August 8, 2009. These yearly gatherings honor the importance of an industry that helped build the foundation of America. Without the men and women who worked tirelessly and selflessly in these mills, the character of our region would not have been built into what it is today. We thank them for everything they continually do to bring attention to this once great industry.
