Proclamation recognizing the Community College of Allegheny County (CCAC) Big Read project and declaring  March 3, 2014 as "Big Read Day" in Allegheny County.

          WHEREAS, the Community College of Allegheny County (CCAC) is one of 77 organizations nationwide to receive a grant as part of The Big Read project of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA). The grant will support CCAC's fourth community partnership focusing on the discussion of a novel and its themes; and
 
WHEREAS, The Big Read is designed to restore reading to the center of American culture by asking communities to come together to read and discuss one book; and
 
WHEREAS, CCAC is fortunate to have many committed non-profit partners; among them are the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall & Museum, Pittsburgh Job Corps, Renewal Treatment, Inc., the University of Pittsburgh, the Shuman Juvenile Detention Center, the State Correctional Institution (SCI) of Pittsburgh, and the Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf.  Also included among these are many of our local schools and libraries; and
 
WHEREAS, the 2014 Big Read is Tim O'Brien's novel, The Things They Carried.  Jan Scruggs, founder and president of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund, will give the keynote address at this year's kickoff event at the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall & Museum;
 
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that Allegheny County Council does hereby declare March 3, 2014 as "Big Read Day" in Allegheny County. We commend CCAC and all of their supporters and contributors for helping to make The Big Read project a success.
