Proclamation declaring May 6, 2008 "Nurses Day" in Allegheny County

WHEREAS, the nearly 2.9 million registered nurses in the United States comprise our nation's largest health care profession; and
WHEREAS, professional nurses are an indispensable component in the safety and quality of care at the multitude of hospitals, nursing homes and other healthcare settings across our region; and
WHEREAS, as the needs of healthcare consumers in Allegheny County become more complex, we must renew our commitment to supporting our nurses and continued to recruit qualified registered nurses in order to maintain Allegheny County's standing as a top-notch healthcare region; and
WHEREAS, the American Nurses Association and the Pennsylvania State Nurses Association have declared the week of May 6-12 as National Nurses Week with the theme “Nursing: A Profession and a Passion” in celebration of the ways in which registered nurses strive to provide safe and high quality patient care and map out the way to improve our health care system ; and
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, Allegheny County Council celebrates the week of May 6-12, 2007 as “National Nurses Week” and calls upon all residents of Allegheny County to join in honoring the nurses who care for all of us and for their efforts to improve our health care system. This Council expresses our appreciation for the nation's registered nurses not just during this week, but at every opportunity throughout the year.
