WHEREAS, on June 6, 2008, Pittsburgh lost one of its most revered businessmen, philanthropists, and athletes; and

WHEREAS, Mr. White was most recently employed as a senior managing director of public finance for Mesirow Financial in downtown Pittsburgh; and

WHEREAS, Mr. White began his career as one of the four defensive lineman for the Pittsburgh Steelers collectively nicknamed the “Steel Curtain” for their role in leading the Steelers to four Superbowl victories in the 1970s; and

WHEREAS, following his athletic career, Mr. White became a prominent stockbroker and spent the next twenty-eight years of his life building an impressive career in finance; and

WHEREAS, at one point during his financial career, Mr. White served as president of the investment firm Daniels & Bell, the first African-American company to purchase a seat on the New York Stock Exchange; and

WHEREAS, Mr. White was also an active philanthropist, involving himself with the Salvation Army, Goodwill Industries, the Boy Scouts of America, PACE School, and Rebuilding Pittsburgh; and

WHEREAS, additionally, Mr. White was a member of the board of trustees for Seton Hill University and a board member for the Blind and Vision Rehabilitation Services of Pittsburgh, chairman of the Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, co-chair of the fundraising campaign for the construction of the new August Wilson Center for African-American Culture, and was a recently elected delegate to the Democratic National Convention for Senator Barack Obama; and

WHEREAS, Mr. White will be sorely missed by his countless friends and fans, by those who have benefited from his generosity, and most of all, by his beloved wife, Karen, his daughter, Stacey, and his many surviving family members;

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, Allegheny County Council wishes to pay tribute to Dwigh...
