Proclamation recognizing the 29th Annual Pow Wow sponsored by the Council of Three Rivers American Indian Center.

Body

WHEREAS, the Council of Three Rivers American Indian Center was initially conceived in 1969 when members of two Native American families in Pittsburgh sought to overcome the feeling of “floating” in the mainstream, preserve their heritage, recapture roots and become more conscious of their rights as Native Americans; and

WHEREAS, in February 1972 after several years of planning, the Council was incorporated as a non-profit organization.  The Council operated from offices in the Homewood section of Pittsburgh until July 1976 when it moved to its present headquarters in Dorseyville, Indiana Township; and

WHEREAS, on September 29th and 30th, the Council will be presenting its 29th Annual Pow Wow.  A gathering of various tribal members who share in singing, dancing and renewing friendships, a Pow Wow expresses and sustains American Indian heritages by observing old traditions; and

WHEREAS, this year's Pow Wow will include a special performance by the Aztec Dancers and Pow Wow participants will be delighted to see all of the traditional American Indian foods and American Indian treasures, such as jewelry, baskets, clothing, quilts, pottery and much more;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that Allegheny County Council does hereby recognize and celebrate the Council of Three Rivers American Indian Center's 29th Annual Pow Wow.  Allegheny County is fortunate to have an organization which is dedicated to providing essential services to American Indian people, and one which is committed to preserving American Indian culture, which serves as an inspiration to us all.
