Proclamation declaring the week from September 27th to October 3rd as "Polycystic Kidney Disease Awareness Week" in Allegheny County and commending the Pittsburgh chapter of the Polycystic Kidney Disease Foundation for hosting the 2009 Pittsburgh Walk for PKD.

WHEREAS, Allegheny County citizens and communities selflessly assist in the fight against deadly diseases by partaking in events that benefit the efforts of national foundations; and
WHEREAS, the Pittsburgh Walk for Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) occurs on Saturday, September 26, 2009 at the Waterfront shopping district in the Borough of Homestead; and
WHEREAS, PKD affects an estimated one in 500 people regardless of the sex, age, race or ethnic origin of the person; and
WHEREAS, the annual event is the largest fundraiser for the Pittsburgh Chapter of the national Polycystic Kidney Disease Foundation, and the proceeds benefit educational and awareness programs as well as researchers who are on the forefront of pioneering solutions to the disease; and
WHEREAS, the mission of the Pittsburgh Walk - like the worldwide mission of the PKD Foundation - is to promote research, advocacy, education, support and awareness so treatments and cures may be advanced and discovered to improve the lives of the families and individuals affected by the disease;
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that Allegheny County Council, on behalf of the citizens of Allegheny County, hereby declares the week from September 27, 2009 to October 3, 2009 as “Polycystic Kidney Disease Awareness Week” in Allegheny County. We recognize the Pittsburgh Walk for Polycystic Kidney Disease for raising awareness of PKD and generating funding for the PKD Foundation, and we hope everyone participating in the event continues their commitment to fighting against PKD.
