Proclamation declaring April 2, 2008 "Tobacco Free Allegheny- Kick Butts Day" in Allegheny County.

WHEREAS, the Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids was established in 1995 in an effort to create awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco products; and
WHEREAS, April 2, 2008 will mark the 13th annual “Kick Butts Day,” a nationwide event established by the Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids that serves as a day for youth to stand out, speak up, and seize control in the fight against tobacco by raising awareness about tobacco and how it harms our health; and
WHEREAS, Kick Butts Day will also provide youths with the opportunity to voice their protests against the Big Tobacco companies who target children and teens in their marketing efforts; and
WHEREAS, this year, youth participants in Allegheny County Busted!, a program that provides teens with the tools to teach their peers the truth about tobacco, will come together in an effort to call attention to the 1200 people who die each day from tobacco-related illness; and
WHEREAS, Allegheny County Busted! will place 1200 luminaries in a display on the sidewalk in front of the Allegheny Intermediate Unit at the Waterfront complex in Homestead. Attached to each bag will be a personal message about someone whose life has been impacted or cut short by tobacco;
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, Allegheny County Council hereby declares April 2, 2008 “Tobacco Free Allegheny- Kick Butts Day” in Allegheny County. We commend Tobacco Free Allegheny, the Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids, Allegheny County Busted!, and the multitude of other tobacco awareness campaigns for their commitment to helping our children life healthier, tobacco-free lives.
