Proclamation honoring and remembering the life of Mr. Lester James Cain, Jr., for his longtime commitment to children and families in the community.
Body
WHEREAS, Allegheny County has been home to individuals, such as longtime community activist, Mr. Lester James Cain, Jr., who have dedicated their lives to enhancing the quality of life in our region; and
WHEREAS, for nineteen years, Mr. Cain served as the Community Program Coordinator for the Office of Urban and Community Services at the University of Pittsburgh; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Cain was president of the Homewood-Brushton Revitalization Development Corp. during the early 1990s, and he was involved in the Gang Peace Council, later renamed the National Council for Urban Peace and Justice; and
WHEREAS, he organized trips for local students and community leaders to meet with members of the Congressional Black Caucus in Washington, D.C. , and he frequently contributed to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's letters page, writing about economic, political, and social issues; and
WHEREAS, although our community grieves at the passing of an individual who so completely personified compassion and community spirit, we know that he will always be remembered, and we join with his family in giving thanks for the life of Lester, a champion of justice and advocate for civil rights, and one of the most admired and respected pioneers we have encountered;
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Allegheny County Council does hereby recognize Mr. Lester James Cain, Jr. for his impact on this community and its citizens. Mr. Cain's commitment to children and families in the community serve as inspirations to us all and, while we cannot hope to replace him, we can honor his memory by commending and emulating the spirit of his dedication.
