Proclamation remembering the life and legacy of the late Dr. Curtis L. Walker, the first African-American Deputy Superintendent for the Pittsburgh Public Schools.

WHEREAS, Dr. Curtis L. Walker, an advocate for civil rights, minority business development, equal rights and higher education, was one of the City of Pittsburgh Public School District's first African-American Deputy Superintendents; and
WHEREAS, he graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a master's in secondary English in 1963 and a doctorate in educational administration in 1972. Dr. Walker served two years in the Army in Panama and four years in the reserve as a unit supply officer; and
WHEREAS, he taught history, science, special education and other courses at Aliquippa public schools, working his way up to assistant principal of Aliquippa Junior High School, until his departure in 1970, where he joined the University of Pittsburgh for five years to teach in the department of education; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Walker was active in the community, serving 12 years as president of Omega Psi Phi, steering the group's growth in the late 1970's, and helping raise money for the Boy Scouts of America, where he helped more than 3,000 urban youth become familiar with scouting. He organized for the Pittsburgh chapter of the United Negro College Fund and was active with the Panhellenic Council and other social, educational and fraternal organizations;
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Allegheny County Council does hereby recognize the late Mr. Curtis L. Walker for his positive impact on this community and its citizens. We commend his public service, serving as an inspiration to us all and, while we cannot hope to replace him, we can honor his memory by commending and emulating the spirit of his dedication.
